| Pilgrims helping themselves up at Arafah |
Today is the 9th of Dhul Hijjah in the Islamic Calendar and it is the day of Arafah It is the day when Muslim pilgrims assemble on the plain of ‘Arafah to complete one of the essential rites of the Hajj (Pilgrimage) which is the 5th pillar of Islam.
Over 2 milllion pilgrims gathered there today and you can see some of the images from there today that I got from Twitter below:
The day after Arafah which is the 10th of Dhul Hijjah is Eid ul Adha also known as Eid ul Kabir where we Muslims slaughter rams, goats, cattle and camels and distribute among family, friends and the needy in commemoration of the the faithfulness of Prophet Ibrahim (AS) also known as Abraham in his willingness to sacrifice Ismail (AS) who was his only son at the time in fulfillment of his vow to do so if God gave him a son.
