S.African gov't denies Mandela discharged from hospital
The South African gogvernment on Saturday refuted media reports that ailing former president Nelson Mandela has been discharged from
hospital.
"Madiba (Mandela's clan name) is still inhospital in Pretoria, and remains in a criticalbut stable condition," presidential spokesman Mac Maharaj said.
"The Presidency has noted incorrect media reports that former President Nelson Mandela has been discharged from hospital," Maharaj said.
"At times his condition becomes unstable, but he responds to medical interventions," said Maharaj.
Since Mandela was rushed to a Pretoria hospital on June 8 for a recurring lung infection, the Presidency has declared his condition as critical but stable.
Last Saturday, presidential spokesman Maharaj said Mandela, 95, was in an unstable condition at times but demonstrated great resilience.
Maharaj said doctors were still working hard to effect a turnaround and a further improvement in his health and to keep Mandela comfortable.
Maharaj's words dashed hopes for Mandela's quick recovery. News about Mandela's health has been fluctuant. Sometimes he was said to have showed signs of sustained improvement, and most often he was reported to be in critical but stable condition.
On Aug. 9, his daughter Zindzi Mandela gave the most encouraging news when she said the anti-apartheid icon managed to sit up.
"He's fine, Tata (father) now manages to situp, like now he sits up in a chair for a fewminutes in a day, every day you know hebecomes more alert more responsive," Zindzi
reportedly said.
The Nobel Peace Prize laureate has been suffering from a recurring lung infection, which is the result of tuberculosis.

Governor Suntai Dissolves Taraba State Cabinet
The recuperating Governor of Taraba state who only arrived the country last Sunday has dissolved the Taraba state government cabinet. It remains to be seen whether he can constitutionally do so even before the Taraba state House of Assembly has not formally accepted his request to be allowed to resume duties after his absence for 10 months following a plane crash that almost claimed his life...
Sources at the Government House also said the governor has also appointed the immediate past Attorney General and Commissioner of Justice, Timothy Katap as the new Secretary to the State Government (SSG) and Aminu Jika as his new Chief of Staff.
This would be the second time that Jika is being appointed as Chief of Staff to this particular governor. Suntai had first appointed him when he took office in 2007.
The source also said both appointees will be sworn in Wednesday at the Government House in Jalingo.
The move, if true, is coming less than a week after the governor returned to the state from a 10-month medical treatment overseas.

Dangote to borrow $3.3 billion to build refinery in Nigeria
News that Dangote Group owned by Africa's richest man, Aliko Dangote plans to build a refinery in Nigeria broke in April. Now, we have additional details of this project...
Dangote Group said on Tuesday it will borrow $3.3 billion to build a $9 billion oil refinery and petrochemical complex in Nigeria, Africa's most populous nation and top oil producer.
The Nigerian group, with interests ranging from cement to basic food processing to oil and gas, also said it was seeking a further $2.25 billion from development funds for the project, into which it would put $3.5 billion of its own equity.
The loan will be signed with financiers on Sept. 4, it said in statement. The owner of the group, Africa's richest man Aliko Dangote, divulged plans for the refinery in April.
The Dangote Group makes up 30 percent of Nigeria's bourse.
Dangote told Reuters then that the refinery would have a capacity of around 400,000 barrels a day by late 2016, almost doubling Nigeria's refining capacity.
"We are not resting on our oars," group spokesman Anthony Chiejina said, adding that the complex, including petrochemical and fertilizer plants, "could be the single largest contribution to this government's economic transformation agenda".
Nigeria now has the capacity to produce some 445,000 barrels per day among four refineries, but they operate well below that owing to decades of mismanagement and corruption.
Nigeria relies on subsidized imports for 80 percent of fuel needs. Along with power shortages, lack of refining capacity is among the major brakes on Africa's second biggest economy. Sorting it out would boost growth and save on fuel import bills.
But it would be bad news for European refiners and oil traders who make huge profits bringing in the gasoline.
Past efforts to build refineries have been delayed or cancelled, but analysts say Dangote should be able to build a profitable Nigerian refinery owing to his past successes in industry and his strong government connections.
A major disincentive to investment in Nigerian refineries is the regulated price of fuel, which keeps pump prices well below market prices at huge cost to the country's treasury.
Dangote says the refinery will still be profitable, although industry experts say that would only be the case if the government guarantees crude supplies at well below the market rate - or subsidizes his end-product.

Syrian Government Says It Has Found Chemicals in Rebel Tunnels
The recriminations continue...
Syrian state television said troops found chemical agents in rebel tunnels in a Damascus suburb on Saturday and some soldiers were "suffocating", intensifying a dispute over blame for a reported nerve gas attack that killed hundreds this week.
The top U.N. disarmament official arrived in Damascus on Saturday to seek access for inspectors to the site of the attack and the United States was realigning naval forces in the region to give President Barack Obama the option for an armed strike on Syria.
Syrian opposition accounts that between 500 and well over 1,000 civilians were killed by gas in munitions fired by forces loyal to President Bashar al-Assad, and video footage of victims' bodies, have heightened calls in the West for a robust, U.S.-led response after 2-1/2 years of international inaction on Syria's conflict.
In a clear attempt to strengthen the government's denials of responsibility for the suspected chemical assault, Syrian state television said soldiers came across chemical agents in rebel tunnels in the suburb of Jobar and some were overcome by fumes.
"Army heroes are entering the tunnels of the terrorists and saw chemical agents," it quoted a "news source" as saying. "In some cases, soldiers are suffocating while entering Jobar. Ambulances came to rescue the people suffocating in Jobar."
An army unit was preparing to storm the insurgent-held suburb, the television added.
Syrian opposition activists accuse Assad's forces of firing nerve gas projectiles into Jobar and other rebellious suburbs before dawn on Wednesday. Later in the week, activists crossed front lines around Damascus to smuggle out tissue samples from victims of the attack.
The Syrian government says it would never resort to chemical weapons against Syrian citizens and in the past has accused rebels of doing so for battlefield advantage, an allegation Western leaders have dismissed.
Assad's government has suggested rebels may have carried out the latest attack themselves to provoke foreign intervention.
Obama has long been hesitant to intervene in Syria, wary of its position straddling faultlines of wider sectarian conflict in the Middle East, and he reiterated such reluctance on Friday.
INTELLIGENCE EVIDENCE
But, in a development that could raise pressure on Obama to act, American and European security sources said U.S. and allied intelligence agencies had made a preliminary assessment that chemical weapons were used by pro-Assad forces this week.
Major world powers - including Russia, Assad's main ally which has long blocked U.N.-sponsored intervention against him - have urged the Syrian leader to cooperate with a U.N. inspection team that arrived on Sunday to pursue earlier allegations of chemical weapons assaults in the civil war.
U.N. High Representative for Disarmament Affairs Angela Kane arrived to Damascus on Saturday to press for a Syrian government green light for inspectors to examine areas of Damascus suburbs said to have been targeted on Wednesday.
Assad's government has not said whether it will give such access despite increasing pressure from the United Nations, Western and Gulf Arab countries and Russia. If confirmed, it would be the world's deadliest chemical attack in decades.
Washington said on Friday it was repositioning warships in the Mediterranean, although officials cautioned that Obama had made no decision on any military move. A U.S. defence official, speaking on condition of anonymity, said the navy would expand its presence there to four destroyers from three.
Secretary of Defense Chuck Hagel, en route to Asia, said Obama had asked the Pentagon for options on Syria.
"The Defense Department has responsibility to provide the president with options for all contingencies," Hagel said. "And that requires positioning our forces, positioning our assets, to be able to carry out different options - whatever options the president might choose." He did not elaborate.
The defence official said the USS Mahan, a destroyer armed with cruise missiles, had finished its deployment and was due to head back to its home base in Norfolk, Virginia. But, he said, the commander of the U.S. Sixth Fleet has decided to keep the ship in the region.

What is the big deal with Ben Affleck playing Batman?
I have been reading Batman this...Batman that all day on Twitter. I did a little research and found that the hullabaloo is about this announcement:
BURBANK, CA, August 22, 2013 – Ending weeks of speculation, Ben Affleck has been set to star as Batman, a.k.a. Bruce Wayne. Affleck and filmmaker Zack Snyder will create an entirely new incarnation of the character in Snyder’s as-yet-untitled project—bringing Batman and Superman together for the first time on the big screen and continuing the director’s vision of their universe, which he established in “Man of Steel.” The announcement was made today by Greg Silverman, President, Creative Development and Worldwide Production, and Sue Kroll, President, Worldwide Marketing and International Distribution, Warner Bros. Pictures.
The studio has slated the film to open worldwide on July 17, 2015.
Last month’s surprise announcement of the new movie featuring both Superman and Batman created a wave of excitement and immediately fueled discussion and debate—among fans as well as in the media—about who would put on the cape and cowl of Bruce Wayne’s alter ego.
Snyder successfully re-imagined the origin of Clark Kent/Superman in the worldwide blockbuster “Man of Steel,” which has earned more than $650 million worldwide to date, and climbing. The director will now create an original vision of Batman and his world for the film that brings the two DC Comics icons together.
Affleck will star opposite Henry Cavill, who will reprise the role of Superman/Clark Kent. The film will also reunite “Man of Steel” stars Amy Adams, Laurence Fishburne and Diane Lane.
In the announcement, Silverman stated, “We knew we needed an extraordinary actor to take on one of DC Comics’ most enduringly popular Super Heroes, and Ben Affleck certainly fits that bill, and then some. His outstanding career is a testament to his talent and we know he and Zack will bring new dimension to the duality of this character.”
Snyder also expressed his excitement about the casting of Affleck, noting, “Ben provides an interesting counter-balance to Henry’s Superman. He has the acting chops to create a layered portrayal of a man who is older and wiser than Clark Kent and bears the scars of a seasoned crime fighter, but retain the charm that the world sees in billionaire Bruce Wayne. I can’t wait to work with him.”
Kroll added, “We are so thrilled that Ben is continuing Warner Bros.’ remarkable legacy with the character of Batman. He is a tremendously gifted actor who will make this role his own in this already much-anticipated pairing of these two beloved heroes.”
Affleck recently starred in the Academy Award®-winning Best Picture “Argo,” which he also directed and produced, earning acclaim and a BAFTA Award nomination for his performance in the film, as well as a number of directing honors. In 2010, he starred in and directed the hit crime thriller “The Town.” His recent acting work also includes “The Company Men,” “State of Play,” and “Hollywoodland,” for which he received a Golden Globe nomination for Best Actor. Earlier in his career, Affleck starred in and co-wrote (with Matt Damon) “Good Will Hunting,” for which he won an Oscar® for Best Original Screenplay.
The new Super Hero film is being scripted by David S. Goyer from a story he co-created with Zack Snyder. Charles Roven and Deborah Snyder are producing, with Benjamin Melniker, Michael E. Uslan and Wesley Coller serving as executive producers.
Production is expected to begin in 2014.I have a question for those making a big issue out of this: Kini big deal?
The film is based on Superman characters created by Jerry Siegel & Joe Shuster, and Batman characters created by Bob Kane, published by DC Entertainment.

Samsung Galaxy Golden Specifications
Samsung have released a dual screen clamshell version of its Galaxy smartphone series for the South Korean market, it is called the Samsung Galaxy Golden. What I like most about this new phone are its 3.7-inch dual screens. You can use the front screen just like you would use a conventional touch screen phone and use its internal screen with its feature phone type keypad. This should be quite popular amongst older smartphone users who might find it difficult to use the latest touch screen phones or those with QWERTY keyboards.

Poor acceptance: “Get another job or…”, Rugged man replies Mode 9
Last week’s emotional outburst from rapper Mode 9 “I
released an album and nobody cared” has gotten a blunt reply from fellow-rapper
Rugged man… ‘Get another job or adapt’ he tells Mode 9.
Rugged Man was speaking on Hot FM’s breakfast radio show and
did not mince words. He said “Mode 9 is not the only one that does the
non-commercial kind of rap. Basically if you are an entertainer you can’t do
music for yourself that’s why you are an entertainer.
‘IF People you are
made to entertain are not entertained, you should do one of two things…get
another job or adapt’ am not saying this to be funny or anything’. If something
is not working anymore the least you can do is try and adopt to what’s up’
‘Even in America at a point it was all Eastside …then
Westside, you can’t do anything about it, if you can’t shape up, you shape out’
‘I actually started writing ‘ehen’ song in English but paul
play advised me ‘you are in Nigeria, make music for Nigerians, add the local
language so people could understand, I put a little comedy to it by bringing in
Normoloss,
‘It’s not about how good you are but how smart you are. I
have said it ‘i don’t want to be ‘he can rap kinda artist’ but ‘to be a
successful artist’. ‘Switching your style doesn’t make you any less of a human
cos at the end of the day ‘what you have achieved is what would be asked.
Mode 9 had recently lamented the neglect of his type of non
commercial rap saying that He dropped an album ‘alphabetical order’ earlier
this year and no one cared.
