Saheed Balogun Sues Fathia over Name

_This looks like bad blood_

Nollywood actor and producer, Saheed Balogun has dragged his estranged wife, Fathia to court over her refusal to drop "Balogun" as her surname according to the Punch newspaper.

He is quoted as saying: She is my ex.
As for my name that she is still answering, the deed will be done soon. The Nigerian law says that after three or four years, you can do something about it. If somebody wants to keep my name, what
of the new person coming in? This has
nothing to do with grudges.”

However, when asked after their
publicized split, Fathia said I laugh, my name is Fathia Balogun and it’s going to remain Balogun; nobody can ever change that and nobody can stop me from answering
that name.”

This looks good enough as a script for a Nollywood movie that I suggest should be titled: "What is in a name"?

How Canada and the United States Spied on World Leaders in 2010

Not so James Bond, but it is still spying...

NSA: Canada 'Let US Spy On World Summits'

Canada allowed America's National Security Agency (NSA) to spy during the G8 and G20 summits in Ontario in 2010, according to reports.

The US allegedly turned its Ottawa embassy into a security command post during a six-day spying operation as President Barack Obama and other world leaders met that June.

The claim was made in a Canadian Broadcasting Corp (CBC) report that cited documents from former NSA contractor Edward Snowden.

It is the latest potential embarrassment for the top-secret spy agency as a result of Snowden's leaks.

He has already revealed the NSA spied on close allies such as Germany and Brazil, sparking diplomatic spats with Washington.

The CBC report said America's spying operation was no secret to Canadian authorities. It said an NSA briefing note described the operation as "closely co-ordinated with the Canadian partner".

It did not reveal the precise targets of the NSA operation, but described part of the agency's mandate at the G20 summit in Toronto as "providing support to policymakers".

A spokesman for Canadian Prime Minister Stephen Harper declined to comment on the report.

"We do not comment on operational matters related to national security. Our security organisations have independent oversight mechanisms to ensure that they fulfill their mandate in accordance with the law," he said.

A spokeswoman for Canada's equivalent of the NSA, the Communications Security Establishment Canada, said they could not comment on the operations of Canada or its allies

Man throws away hard drive with Bitcoin worth £4million

I should stop throwing things away...

Bitcoin is capturing the imagination of many Internet users as a digital currency.

Missing: hard drive containing Bitcoins worth £4m in Newport landfill site

Buried somewhere under four feet of mud and rubbish, in the Docksway landfill site near Newport, Wales, in a space about the size of a football pitch is a computer hard drive worth more than £4m.

It belonged to James Howells, who threw it out when he was clearing up his desk in mid-summer and discovered the part, rescued from a defunct Dell laptop. He found it in a drawer and put it in a bin.

And then last Friday he realised that it held a digital wallet with 7,500 Bitcoins created for almost nothing in 2009 - and then worth about the same.

"You know when you put something in the bin, and in your head, say to yourself 'that's a bad idea'? I really did have that," Howells, who works in IT, told the Guardian. "I don't have an exact date, the only time period I can give – and I've been racking my own brains – is between 20 June and 10 August. Probably mid-July". At the time he obliviously threw them away, the 7,500 Bitcoins on the hard-drive were worth around £500,000. Since then, the cryptocurrency's value has soared, passing $1,000 on Wednesday afternoon.

Although Bitcoins have recently become part of the zeitgeist – with Virgin saying it will accept the currency for its Virgin Galactic flights, and central bankers considering its position in finance seriously – Howells generated his in early 2009, when the currency was only known in tech circles. At that time, a few months after its launch, it was comparatively easy to "mine" the digital currency, effectively creating money by computing: Howells ran a program on his laptop for a week to generate his stash. Nowadays, doing the same would require enormously expensive computing power.

That lost hard drive, though, contains the cryptographic "private key" that is needed to be able to access and spend the Bitcoins; without it, the "money" is lost forever.

And Howells didn't have a backup.

Top 8 Online Shopping Websites in Nigeria

The online market place in Nigeria has grown very quickly especially within the last 3-5 years with more and more people choosing to buy things online rather than go to the physical market. I have done the research and now present to you the top 8 websites for online shopping in Nigeria. These websites offer a wide variety of products ranging from electronics, smartphones, clothes, books, jewelry and much more. I have not listed websites that focus on one product or industry like cars or real estate.

The list is in descending order starting from No.8:

8. Parolz.com
Parolz.com is a new website that has offers on eating and hanging out, shopping and gifts, hotels and lodging, beauty and lifestyle, health and body as well as transportation services. It also has a special product called CityCard which gives the holder access to up to 60% discount of some select deals.

7. Kiramu.ng
Kiramu.ng is a classifieds website allowing individuals and businesses post free adverts in different categories, it has a decent amount of traffic and the adverts posted are quite attractive too.

6. Taafoo.com
Taafoo.com is a popular online store that focuses mainly on clothes and accessories as well as electronic gadgets. You can order and pay for goods online and have them delivered to you for free or pick them up at their office.

5. Kaymu.com.ng
Kaymu.com.ng is an online marketplace where buyers and sellers can meet to conclude transactions. There is a wide range of products on offer including clothes, electronics and cars. Sellers can sell with fixed prices or via auction.

4. DealDey.com
Dealdey.com presents deals to its users every day on wide range of items and gives them the chance to enjoy discounts at places whose services they want and are close to them. It also gives users the chance to refer their friends to get certain benefits.

3. Olx.com.ng
Olx.com.ng is now the leading classifieds website in Nigeria with every one of us encouraged to “sell it”, what exactly?  Virtually anything as long as it is legal. By virtue of the fact that there is a wide array of products to be sold, it is very popular with many buyers.

2. Konga.com
Konga.com is one of the big 2 websites dominating Nigeria’s online retail market. It has a huge stock of goods for sale, home appliances, phones, books, clothes even recharge cards. You can pay on delivery, online and there is nationwide delivery or you can pick-up your goods yourself.  Goods come at competitive prices, if you are not an “alaroro” (a scrooge), you might be tempted to buy from Konga.com or its big rival which is the No.1 online retail destination in Nigeria. Can you guess which website it is?

1. Jumia.com.ng
Jumia.com.ng is Nigeria’s No.1 online retail website, it is very similar to Konga.com and in reality there is very little to choose between them. However, it gets top marks for being the first ‘full-blooded’ attempt to sell goods to Nigerians via the Internet. It has a wide range of items on sale including home appliances, smartphones, computers, men and women’s clothes, shoes bags with free delivery in Lagos and Abuja. There is payment on delivery or online and pick-up stations are also available should you prefer them.

There you have it, let me know what you think of my list and the websites by dropping a comment.

New-PDP Merges with APC

After months of conflict with the mainstream People's Democratic Party (PDP), the New-PDP (nPDP) has announced its merger with the All Progressives Congress (APC)

The Abubakar Baraje-led faction of the New Peoples Democratic Party, nPDP, has finally merged with the All Progressives Congress, APC.

This was made known at the end of a meeting held at the Kano Governors Lodge in Abuja on Tuesday.
A statement signed by the Interim Chairman of the APC, Chief Bisi Akande, said the party welcomes the defectors with open arms.

Mr. Baraje read the terse communique to journalists at about 11.46 a.m.

The merger means that the APC now has its 11 governors joining the seven decamped governors who were former members of the New PDP; bringing the total of the party governors to 18.

The statement which was signed by Baraje reads in parts: “In the interest of our country and in order to rescue Nigeria, we the new PDP have agreed to merge and work with the APC.”

In attendance at the meeting were APC leaders, Asiwaju Bola Tinubu and Muhammed Buhari, the governors of Niger, Rivers, Kano and Kwara states, Babangida Aliyu, Rotimi Amaechi, Rabiu Kwakwaso, and Abdulfatah Ahmed. Also present were Senator Bukola Saraki and Prince Olagunsoye Oyinlola.

Angola bans Islam?

English: A picture of people performing (circu...
The Ka'aba is Islam's holiest site in Mecca
According to different sources, this seems to be the case and it is rather myopic and sad for Angola...

A number of news outlets have reported that Angola has "banned" Islam and started to dismantle mosques in a bold effort to stem the spread of Muslim extremism.

Weekly French-language Moroccan newspaper La Nouvelle Tribune published an article on Friday sourcing "several" Angolan officials, including the Southwest African nation's minister of culture, Rosa Cruz, who reportedly offered the following remarks, which have been translated from French: "The process of legalization of Islam has not been approved by the Ministry of Justice and Human Rights, their mosques would be closed until further notice."

The media reports have not described why exactly Islam apparently faces a need to be legalized despite its presence in the country for many years.

OnIslam.net reports that the African economic news agency Agence Ecofin wrote that Cruz made the statement at an appearance last week before the 6th Commission of the National Assembly. The website goes on to note that, "According to several Angolan newspapers, Angola has become the first country in the world to ban Islam and Muslims, taking first measures by destroying mosques in the country."

University of Nicosia Set to Accept Bitcoin as Payment

Bitcoin, bitcoin coin, physical bitcoin, bitco...
The whole world is going "e". As a result, we should be able to pay for stuff with virtual currencies, I think this university in Cyprus agrees...

University: Pay Us in Bitcoin

First you could buy a condo with Bitcoin and now you can pay your tuition using the digital currency, too—if you attend Cyprus' University of Nicosia, that is. The school says it's the first university to offer fees payable in the currency feds are praising, and those with Bitcoins to throw around will probably feel right at home: Starting next spring, the school will offer a master of science degree in digital currency that will dive into systems like Bitcoin and how they work, Wired reports, noting the move could pay off big for the university—depending on Bitcoin price trends, of course.
