President Goodluck Jonathan |
Why we want Jonathan impeached – ACN
The Action Congress of Nigeria, ACN, has called on the
National Assembly to impeach President Goodluck Jonathan for his failure to
respect the rule of law and the Constitution of the Federal Republic of
Nigeria.
ACN also called on the Police Service Commission, PSC, to
address the causes of the ongoing crisis in Rivers State rather than playing a
safe game in one direction.
In a statement on Sunday by its National Publicity
Secretary, Alhaji Lai Mohammed, the party said the statement credited to PSC
Chairman, Mike Okiro, suggested that the Commission was only interested in the
role of the police in the last week’s clashes, rather than how the police
hierarchy in the state “allowed the flare-up simply because it is acting to
protect certain interests at the expense of public interest.
The party said, “Governor Rotimi Amaechi of Rivers has
documented, in a much-publicised letter to Mr. Okiro, how the Police
Commissioner in Rivers, Mr. Joseph Mbu, has thrown professionalism to the winds
in pursuit of his narrow agenda at the expense of the security of the state.
“This is why we are insisting that the President must be
impeached by the National Assembly for his failure to respect the rule of law
and the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria,” the party said.
But the leadership of the Peoples Democratic Party accused
the ACN of plotting to destabilise Nigeria.
In a statement in Abuja on Sunday, the party said the ACN’s
call was an indication that the opposition party was indeed unserious, lacked
direction and only sought to distabilise the polity.
Okeke who noted that the PDP was not in support of the
fracas witnessed in the Rivers State House of Assembly recently, added that
brawls were “common features in parliaments across the world”, and wondered how
the recent fray in the Assembly could translate into an impeachable offence on
the part of the President.
