I had known the statistic for at least 3 years that Nairaland.com was the most visited Nigerian owned website. However, I did not realise until today that Nairaland has actually been dethroned from its highly prized Nigerian No.1 website position. That position now belongs toVanguardngr.com, the website of the popular Vanguard Newspaper.
Vanguardngr.com has an Alexa traffic global rank of 1,536 whilst it is ranked No.7 in Nigeria but more impotantly, it is the No.1 Nigerian-owned website beating Nairaland.com which ranks 1,898 in the world and No.11 in Nigeria. Not very far behind these two is Jobberman.com which ranks 4801 in the world and No. 13 in Nigeria.
Vanguardngr.com had been threatening to take Nigerian No.1 website for sometime after it upgraded its website and robustly integrated social networking platforms like Facebook and Twitter to it. This has in no small way lead to the massive growth of its Facebook fan base which as at the time of typing this stands at 239,597 fans, it also has 73, 059 Twitter followers at the moment . This in effect means that almost instantly, Vanguard can get hundreds of thousands of people viewing its website by posting a news story on its website. This has proven to be too potent a weapon for other Nigerian websites including Nairaland. I have no doubt that this might have had an effect on Nairaland's owner Seun Osewa, who for so long was resistant to any major changes on his website. However, in February, he launched Nairaland beta and has been asking for inputs from members of Nairaland a.k.a. Nairalanders yo improve the 'New Nairaland'.
It was always a matter of time before Nairaland lost its leadership position amongst Nigerian websites, let us see how well it can react to being part of the chasing pack instead of the leader amongst them.
Nice info...
