Super Eagles to get fitness trainer for 2014 World Cup

Officials have revealed that Nigeria will hire a fitness trainer for the World Cup in Brazil.

The Nigeria Football Federation (NFF), are currently searching for a fitness trainer in time for next year’s competition and according to a source from the football house, the trainer will work with all the national teams.

“We realised that one of the secrets that saw our U17 team through at the U17 World Cup in UAE was fitness,” a top official told MTNFootball.com “And as such we want to ensure that all our national teams could play for 120 minutes without wearing out.

“You know in Brazil a lot of things would count and it would be survival of the fittest.

“We don’t have a time frame or a preferred nationality of this trainer, we just want the best for the national teams.”

In the 90s, members of the armed forces were called in to drill Super Eagles player into full fitness.

President Goodluck Jonathan's Christmas Message to Nigerians

As the world marks the birth of Jesus
Christ, let me, on behalf of myself, my
family and the Federal Government,
extend the good tidings of peace progress and joy to every home
throughout our beloved country Nigeria.

Christmas is a time of joyous family
gatherings and as President, I see every Nigerian as a member of my family and I urge us all to retain the unique sense of brotherly love that this season evokes beyond the Yuletide period.

While we will surely mark this holiday in our different ways and according to our established traditions, it is my desire that we all celebrate Christmas with some minimum comforts and my team and I have long prepared for this by working to improve our infrastructure especially those that most serve us during this
season.

Knowing that this period is the peak
period for cross country travels amongst our people, this administration has fast tracked the repair and reconstruction of
artery roads nationwide. We have also
ensured that the nightmare our citizens suffered at fuel stations during periods like this is put behind us.

For the second year in a row, train services have continued to run from the Lagos Terminus all the way to The hinterlands of the North. This year, we also introduced cargo and haulage train services from the Lagos Port to up country locations.

With the Enugu airport now handling
international flights, more of our people can fly directly to their localities resulting in reduced pressure on our roads.

Our policies to spur local production of
staples such as rice and wheat are
bearing fruits as evidenced by the 2013 Global Hunger Index.

Although I will not depend on statistics
until every Nigerian has enough to eat at all times and in every season, the report is salutary and only galvanizes us to further action.

I have also personally monitored
government's fiscal effort which we
ensured were tightened for the purpose of avoiding or severely reducing the seasonal inflationary trends on consumer goods around this time of the year with the attendant result that inflation is at
single digit rate.

These steps have been undertaken
because of my belief that every good and great thing is possible in our country if we desire to achieve it.

So, as we all celebrate with friends and
family, I say from me to you, Merry
Christmas and may the joys of the season extend from our individual homes to those of our neighbors and neighboringcommunities irrespective of religion and region.

Kalashnikov, inventor of the Kalashnikov (AK-47) dies

Kalashnikov inventor of the Kalashnikov (I guess this is the only time, I can do this)...

The Man Who Invented The AK-47 Has Died — Here's His Greatest Regret

Mikhail Kalashnikov

Mikhail Kalashnikov, the creator of the famous AK-47 assault rifle, has died at the age of 94, according to Russia Today. He had reportedly been suffering from heart problems and was in intensive care since November.

The Kalashnikov AK-47 is frequently cited as the world's most popular assault rifle, with its only serious rival being the American M-series rifle. Still, Kalashnikov had mixed feelings about his success.

"I would prefer to have invented a machine that people could use and that would help farmers with their work — for example a lawnmower," he said on a visit to Germany in 2002.

Kalashnikov was a self-taught peasant turned tank mechanic who never finished high school, RT writes, and he only became a weapon designer after he was shot in the shoulder in World War II. The AK-47 was introduced in 1948 and became one of the first assault rifles of the 2nd generation. Its remarkable success come from a variety of factors, including durability and low production cost — they reportedly sold in war-torn countries for as little as $15. However, their popularity amongst criminals and terrorists led to some concern for the inventor.

“Whenever I look at TV and I see the weapon I invented to defend my motherland in the hands of these bin Ladens, I ask myself the same question: 'How did it get into their hands?' ” Kalashnikov said in 2006. “I didn't put it in the hands of bandits and terrorists, and it's not my fault that it has mushroomed uncontrollably across the globe. Can I be blamed that they consider it the most reliable weapon?”

"It is painful for me to see when criminal elements of all kinds fire from my weapon," he explained again in 2009, on his 90th birthday.

In hindsight, too, many would have regretted another decision. The original design for the AK-47 was never patented, and Kalashnikov reportedly never saw any of the profits from his invention — a few years ago it was estimated that half the AK-47s in the world were actually counterfeits. Still, the inventor never seemed to mind.

“At that time, patenting inventions wasn't an issue in our country,” he explained in 2006. “We worked for socialist society, for the good of the people, which I never regret.”

What Obasanjo Told APC Leaders when they Visited Him

Chieftains of the All Progressives Congress (APC) visited Nigeria's former President, Olusegun Obasanjo at his residence in Ota but what did he tell them?

‘I Am A Card Carrying Member Of PDP’, Obasanjo Tells APC

A former Nigerian President, Olusegun Obasanjo, has told the All Progressives Congress (APC) that he remains a ‘card carrying member’ of the ruling Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

At his Hilltop home in Abeokuta, capital of Ogun State, Obasanjo told the leaders of the APC, who visited him on Saturday in continuation of their consultations on political developments in Nigeria that he
is a democrat that believes in the existence of opposition.

He stressed the need for politicians to play by the rules of the game and play politics without bitterness.

“My Party is PDP. My politics is Nigeria, Africa and the World in that order. I am a democrat and I do know that one of the essential ingredients of democracy is opposition.

“Always put Nigeria first above personal and group interests. “The politics that should be played should
be politics with decency, without rancour and one that has Nigeria at the heart of all that is done.

“I am incurably optimistic about Nigeria and I am also totally committed to Nigeria and nothing will divert me or distract me from that commitment,” Obasanjo stated.

The APC leaders eulogised the virtues of the former president, describing him as a reference point in Nigeria’s politics.

Some of the party members present the meeting are the National Interim Chairman of the party, Mr Bisi Akande, former Lagos State Governor, Bola Tinubu, Gen Mohammadu Buhari, Rivers State Governor, Rotimi Amaechi, Kawu Baraje, Governor of Imo State Rochas Okorocha, Abiola Ajimobi of Oyo, Alimodu Sherif, Mallam Nasir El-Rufai, Abiola Ajimobi and Babatunde Fashola, Femi Fani-Kayode and former Anti-graft Czar,Mr Nuhu Ribadu.

4 Cops Arrested for Raping a Schoolgirl for Over 2 Months in India

This story is disturbing...

Four cops arrested for minor's gang rape

Heaping shame on khaki, four cops of Chandigarh police were arrested and one booked on Thursday for raping, molesting and threatening a minor schoolgirl for two-and-a-half months. They were identified as constables Akshay, Sunil, Jagtar and Himmat Singh.

The survivor claimed that she would be able to identify the fifth cop when he is produced before her. Out of the five accused, constable Sunil was posted at crime branch and other four were with PCR wing of Chandigarh police. Akshay and Sunil have been arrested.

Narrating her traumatic tale before the investigators, the survivor said, "Sometimes I even scaled the rear wall of the school to go home to escape the policemen lying in wait at the entrance gate of my school." The girl was working part-time at a shop.

Pushed to the wall by this non-stop exploitation, the girl was on the verge of committing suicide. She finally told her brother about her spine-chilling ordeal and he sought the help of a local BJP leader on Thursday.
Talking to TOI, the survivor's brother said, "My sister was being exploited for two-and-a-half months and things had become so bad that she decided to commit suicide on Thursday. Constable Akshay came in contact with my sister when he had visited our house over a complaint regarding some quarrel some months ago."

Even after the whole sordid tale of exploitation and violation of the teenager came out, the cops decided to act only against one policeman. All the accused were only booked following the intervention of local BJP leaders.

Caught and cornered, some of the accused policemen apologized to the girl, and tried to convince her that one of them would marry her. In her statement recorded by a woman sub-inspector in the presence of DSP (central) Ashish Kapoor at Sector 17 police station, the survivor said initially Akshay started exploiting her, but he was later joined by Sunil and three others. According to sources, the survivor stated in her complaint that, "Jagtar and Himmat used to molest her and two of them had forced her to have physical relationship." IG (UT) RK Upadhyay said, "We registered a case of gang rape, molestation and threatening against policemen and all have been suspended with immediate effect."

According to sources, the hapless girl was so upset at one time that she smashed the headlight of a PCR motorcycle used by constable Jagtar. But this was used by the latter to scare the girl and exploit her by threatening that a case would be registered against her for damaging police property.

West African Examinations Council
West African Examinations Council (Photo credit: Wikipedia)
The results for the 2013 November/December West Africa Senior Secondary Certificate Examination (private), popularly known as GCE are out and it does not look like many candidates passed the examination...

This was revealed by the Head of the National Office of the West African Examination Council (WAEC), Mr Charles Eguridu, on Thursday at a press briefing held in Lagos to announce the release of the Nov/Dec 2013 WASSCE.

Asked what the possible reasons for the continuous recording of students’ mass failure in the past few years, he said the council was not in the best position to decipher the reasons, but noted that majority of the candidates who wrote the examinations this time were working class people who most likely did not have enough time to give appropriate attention to their studies.

He disclosed that a total of 308,217 candidates registered for the examination out of which 296, 827 candidates consisting of 163, 659 males and 133,168 females sat the examination. And out of the total number of candidates, 299,784, including absentees have their results fully released.

8,433 candidates representing 2.74 per cent of the total number of candidates, Eguridu said, have a few of their subjects being processed due to some errors candidates made in the course of registration or while writing the examination.

He also said of the total number of candidates that sat for the examination, 120, 115 representing 40.46 per cent obtained six credits and above; 161, 721 candidates representing 54. 48 per cent obtained credit and above.

198, 832 candidates representing 66.98 per cent obtained credits and above in four subjects while 230, 325 candidates, representing 77.59 per cent obtained credits and above in three subjects, with a total of 256, 500 candidates representing 86.41 per cent obtained credits and above in two subjects, Eguridu stated.

Only a diminutive 86,612 candidates representing 29. 17 per cent of the 296, 827 total number of candidates who sat the examination obtained credits and above in five subjects including English Language and Mathematics.

Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala Presents 2014 Budget to National Assembly

After much controversy about its presentation, the 2014 budget proposal was presented to both houses of the National Assembly today by Nigeria's Minister of Finance and Coordinating Minister of the Econonmy, Dr. Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala representing President Goodluck Jonathan...

Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala

Okonjo-Iweala Presents 2014 Budget Estimates To National Assembly

Dr. Ngozi Okonjo Iweala, the Minister of Finance and Coordinating Minister of the Economy laid the 2014 budget estimates separately before both chambers of the National Assembly on Thursday in an event devoid of speech making and other ceremonies associated with similar events in the past.

The Finance Minister who was accompanied to the National Assembly by a retinue of her colleagues in the Federal Executive Council first laid the budget estimate at the Senate after a motion moved by Senator Ndoma Egba, the leader of the Senate and seconded by Senator George Akume of Benue State.

Okonjo-Iweala laid the budget before the Senators after which her and her entourage was discharged from the National Assembly and the Senate continued with its other businesses in a process which lasted less than five minutes.

In the same vein, Honourable Mulikat Akande, moved the motion to allow the Finance Minister to lay the budget before the Representatives at the lower chamber. There was however a bit of rowdiness as lawmakers from Peoples Democratic Party and All Progressives Congress engaged in a shout of their party slogans.

Okonjo Iweala and her team were therefore discharged after she had laid the budget on the table. There were no comments from the Speaker of the House of Representatives, Honourable Aminu Tambuwal or the President of the Senate, David Mark about the budget who presided over the event in both chamber.

Also, the details of the budget estimates submitted by the Finance Minister have not been made public as at the time of filing in this story.
